Title:
The Wives of Bath |
After novels about the everyday life of a famous 'star' (Simply Divine), living in the country (Pastures Nouveaux, Bad Heir Day), working for a publishing house (Fame Fatale) and how to begin a whole new life (Azur Like It) this sixth novel by Wendy Holden gives us an hilarious description on the joys of parenthood.
The first couple of leading characters are Hugo and Amanda, both rich and trendy. Amanda recently lost her job with a New York glossy due to her sharp tongue and even sharper pen. She mainly wants a child because ‘every celebrity has one’. Hugo didn’t have any say in it but he’s in for a surprise later! The second couple is Alice and Jake, perfectly happy with Alice’s pregnancy, although it wasn’t exactly planned because they only met an hour before the child was conceived. Jake is very devoted to the environment which isn't making Alice’s life as a young mother any easier.
According to me Wendy Holden must be a great mother herself because she describes very sharply what’s nice and what's absolutely not nice in being pregnant and having children. She does this with a lot of ‘tongue in cheek’ humor and sprinkles it with the badly needed amount of romance. Because of the originality, the enjoyable language use and the sharp analysis of people, Wendy Holden stays my favorite in this category!
