Carly is complaining to her friend, Eva, about her boss at the clothing catalogue company. Carly has always taken great pleasure in doing her job, but having him continuously using her ideas and taking all the credit for them is driving Carly to the breaking point. Eva is used to Carly’s ranting and has come to lunch prepared with the classified ad section. As they look over the ads, Eva spots an ad for an experienced dominatrix and declares that to be the perfect opportunity for Carly. Carly believes Eva has lost her mind, she has no experience in domination, doesn’t know the first thing about it-they’d never hire her. After returning to work, her boss, Mr. Franklin, calls her into his office and launches into degrading Carly because one of her ideas that he stole and presented prematurely to management flopped. Carly finally explodes and not only tells Mr. Franklin off, but she also quits and walks out.

After walking out on her job and boss, Carly begins to panic and so she calls Eva to talk to her about what just happened. With reality setting in, Eva keeps her calm and helps Carly to not panic. She also reminds Carly about the dominatrix ad and makes her promise to call about it. The following day, after sleeping in and getting a nagging phone call from Eva, Carly calls Club de Sade fully expecting the position to already be filled. Instead, she is told to come down to the club for an interview in half an hour. After impressing Anthony, the club manager, Carly walks away from the interview with a job and an idea of what’s expected of her but no idea how to go about it. How does one learn to use a whip? Well, they attend a ‘Dominance 101-What You Need to Know for Responsible Ownership’ seminar, which is taught by the very sexy, dominant Jesse Hernandez.

Club de Sade is a story sure to keep you embroiled in the pages for hours. It’s full of ironic situations that kept me alternately smiling and plotting devious ideas of things I’d do if I was in Carly’s situation. I loved getting an inside look at the workings of a BDSM club, whether real or made up. All of the characters are memorable, even the boss who comes back into the story later on in a big way. Jesse and Carly’s budding relationship is a joy to read about and it was fascinating to experience the world of BDSM through the eyes of a newbie as Carly discovers her tendency toward being submissive. Claire Thompson does an amazing job tackling the issues involving BDSM, play clubs, and the community’s general attitude toward the bondage and discipline scene. Club de Sade is a book I could read many times over and never tire of. It’s truly a pleasure to read and a book you could read many times and continue to find enjoyment in. Definitely a keeper.
