Louise Bernikow tells us about the day she meets an abandoned boxer sitting calmly in a police car. Out of sympathy, she takes the dog home knowing nothing about dogs or how to take care of them. What follows is how her life changes after that in, oh, so many ways. Walking Libro, the boxer, keeps her healthy, hooking up with other dog owners increases her social contact and having him by her side makes her feel emotionally stronger.
Because Louise Bernikow is a writer, she wrote everything down in a fun and entertaining way, complete with little doggy feet and wet doggy kisses. She tells about the daily dog runs, the meetings with the neighbors and their dogs in the park, and the bar visits which Libro enjoys so much.
This charming memoir tells us that sometimes dogs are the only loyal friends we have. It's a lively story, which explains exactly how things are in urban surroundings. Life is not easy and relationships do not always work out as planned. This well written book shows a different view on the life and treatment of dogs in public New York. Bark If You Love Me proves how a love story does not always have to be about a woman falling for a man, as you will find out in this endearing tale about how a woman falls for a dog!
As a foreigner I found the writing style a bit difficult though, it didn't read as quick as my other books.
* Libro is the Spanish word for Book ;)
