Jack Field is a forty-two year old ex-cop who got fired for preventing Duke to end up in court after his parents were murdered. Now he owns a canine kennel in Maine named Dog Hill and works as a dog trainer and behaviour specialist. Duke is now Jack’s foster son and helps out in the kennel.

His girlfriend, thirty-two year old Jamie Cutter is a part-time medical examiner. She’s divorcing her soon-to-be ex-husband, Orin. She gets a call from her Uncle Horace, the local sheriff, about the death of Allison DeMarco. Allison's dog Ginger had been barking and they discovered Allison dead in her home. Because Jack was Ginger's dog trainer, he goes to the house to take care of the dog, to calm her down. The poor dog lost its owner after all.

When he arrives he gets into a fight with Sam Kirby, the sheriff's deputy who was aiming his gun at Ginger and Jack kicks him in the face. The meeting with the sheriff himself doesn’t go any better as he’s Jaime’s uncle and he isn’t all too fond on the two of them going out together. But they finally all agree that it is better that Jack does take Ginger along with him to his kennel because the dog is only irritating everyone on the scene of murder.

But who killed Allison? The local police thinks Tim Berry did it. But Jack is convinced that even though Tim and his daughter Tara fled, it wasn't Tim. So together with Jamie they start their own investigation,..

A Nose For Murder is written in the first person. The story is so full of knowledge which I’m sure you won’t find much in any other fiction books. It’s like getting personal training sessions from the author himself. Not only does he include lots of dog training tips and rules, he also has a clear own vision and dares to go against standard dog training methods. But of course this book is mainly focusing on the entertaining fiction part. Being his first work of fiction I think he really proved himself being capable of writing a very good interesting but above all thrilling fictional story.

If you’d like to learn about dog training while reading, this is the excellent book for any dog lover.
