Counting Midnight

Vasile Veliscescu is a vampire who had lost his lover, Nina Carruthers, two years ago. When she was sixteen, he had rescued her from two men who were raping her. He bled her attackers dry and from then on protected and watched her. Every night he would go to her and at times hold her. After a while he became her lover. At night he would come to her and make love to her, never saying a single word. He was her enigmatic Midnight Lover. Then one fateful night he heard a cry in his head, “Please forgive me. If I had one more minute to live, I’d live it with you.” And then she was gone. He could no longer feel her essence in this world.

But two years later he sees her sitting in front of him applying for a position in his corporation. She is different and yet still the same, almost ethereal and wraithlike. He knows in his heart that the woman sitting in front of him is his Nina and he is angry at her for disappearing from him.

Nina Carruthers had suffered from a car accident two years ago. It had left her in a coma for weeks and had also infected her with a very serious infection that was vicious. Now she was applying for a position in Velicescu Finance and she couldn’t help but notice how the man in front of her reminded her of someone. She had never seen her Midnight Lover’s face but somehow Mr. Vasile Velicescu seemed to remind her of him.

This book is my first foray into the vampire realm and I have to say that it has made a believer of me. Vasile Velicescu is one of the most unforgettable characters that has ever been written. The strength of his love for Nina is very palpable in the book, the way he cares for her and always comes to her whenever he feels that she needs him always melts my heart. Counting Midnight is a very powerful story of true love between a vampire and a human. There is a very genuine quality about the story and I have to say that JJ Massa is one of the authors that I predict will go a very long way in this industry. JJ Massa has the ability to write characters that are real, a plot line that is involving and a poetic quality to her turn of phrase. All in all, I say “Bravo!”
